SR 91 & Norton Road Improvement Project

SR 91 Norton New Lane Shift

Construction Progress

Work continues on the widening project at the Norton Road/SR 91 intersection improvement at the Stow-Hudson border.  Crews are widening on the south side of Norton Road, west of SR 91. Mid-June, once all of the new curb and pavement has been replaced on the southerly section of the roadway, the contractor will begin work on the north side of Norton Road in this area. New traffic patterns, lane shifts and minor delays can be expected, but two-way traffic will be maintained.

The bridge on SR 91/Darrow Road over the bike trail has been replaced with an arch culvert. The bike trail between Sowul Boulevard and Norton Road is open. The trail surface is compacted limestone. Additional work such as sealing, painting, and grouting the culvert along with placing the asphalt base and surface will take place when it is warmer in late spring and summer, at which time the trail will be closed. Please view the Summit County Metro Parks website for bike trail updates and alternative routes.

Darrow Road now has two lanes, northbound and southbound, and a left turn lane for southbound traffic at Fishcreek Road. Fishcreek Road has been reconstructed with new curbs and a future turn lane to southbound Darrow Road.  The contractor is now working on replacing the existing traffic signals at SR 91/Norton Road and installing a new traffic signal at SR 91/Fishcreek Road. The signal work will continue into the spring.  Once operational, the temporary signal at the Shoppes of Stow and Bruegger’s Bagels will be removed.

All underground utility work has been completed for the Norton Road portion of the project. Crews will now begin the necessary work to construct the shared use path and widening work on Norton Road. Two-way traffic will continue while this work takes place through the summer. Note that lane shifts and changes in the traffic patterns will occur while the work progresses.

Final paving is scheduled for July with landscaping and clean-up scheduled for August, 2017.

Project Description

The intersection at SR 91 and Norton Road experiences substantial traffic delays and congestion, especially during rush hour traffic. This project will reduce the delays experienced by travelers.

Improvements in Hudson and Stow in the SR 91 (Darrow Road) and Norton Road area continue.  These improvements will better accommodate vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians on Norton Road. This work includes adding right-turn-only lanes and resurfacing on both SR 91 and Norton Road. In addition, the project will include upgraded signalization of the intersection, a shared-use path on Norton Road, plus new curbs, walks, signing, pavement markings, and drainage improvements to SR 91.
